What It Costs & Staying Current

Fees & Renewal

Resident application fees total no more than $50: up to $10 clerk fee, up to $35 local law-enforcement fee, and $5 State Police fee (§ 18.2-308.03). Some localities charge less. Nonresident permits: State Police fee not to exceed $100 (§ 18.2-308.06).

Renewing without the headache

Permits last 5 years. Prior permit holders apply for a new five-year permit on the SP-248 form; you need not appear in person and may mail the application with a copy of your photo ID (§ 18.2-308.010). If the court receives it at least 90 days before your current permit expires, the new permit takes effect on the old one's expiration date. Having previously held a Virginia permit counts as proof of competence (§ 18.2-308.02(B)(6)). Deployed military members get a 90-day post-expiration grace period.
